Sept. 12, 2012: NOVA Open Staff & Attendees Interviewed

Earlier in the year, Alan Siegel met with and interviewed a number of NOVA Open staff members and attendees who have one foot in Warhammer 40,000 and another solidly in the United States military.  His article was published today in SLATE, a daily web-based magazine.  Entitled, “Marines Who Love Space Marines,” Alan provides a cogent glimpse into some of the reasons our military gamers play Warhammer 40,000:

Marines Who Love Space Marines

Why American troops can’t get enough of Warhammer 40,000, a fantasy tabletop game set in the 41st millennium.

Sgt. 1st Class Trinidad Gutierrez

In Afghanistan, Army Sgt. 1st Class Trinidad Gutierrez strategizes as he plays Warhammer 40,000 against Army Sgt. Steffan McBee.  (Courtesy of Army Sgt. Steffan McBee ~ who attended the 2011 NOVA Open; Steffan was unable to attend 2012 because his is currently deployed.)

“As an Army officer, Maj. Stephen D. Carey has served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. In his spare time, he fights a different kind of battle, one that rages in the apocalyptic 41st millennium. The distant future would be a terrifying realm for a mere mortal, what with all the Necrons, Tyranids, and Tau on the loose. To survive the war-torn galaxy, Carey enlists the help of marauding, green-skinned Orks. He also presides over an Imperial Guard army, because some days, defending mankind is more fun than trying to destroy it.”
